
Overall, Gilmore Girls portrayal of Korean Americans has met with some criticism, and “I Get a Sidekick Out of You” exemplifies many of these problems. Kim into behaviors her own daughter resorted to growing up – hiding her crucifixes under the same floorboards and ordering in a human-sized Buddha statue to have for a traditional Buddhist wedding. However, Lane’s grandmother arrives from Korea after 45 years of refusing to travel, and her own devout Buddhism triggers Mrs. Kim wants to plan a traditional, conservative Christian wedding, but Lane is more interested in her bachelorette party and reception (both of which will be boozy and flirty) going smoothly. The tense dynamic within the Kim family is expanded upon and examined when they work together to plan Lane’s wedding to her bandmate Dave in the Season 6 episode “I Get a Sidekick Out of You”. Kim, a strict Seventh-Day Adventist, first hiding rock CD’s and make-up under her floorboards, and later being kicked out after sneaking out of the house to perform a gig with her band. Throughout the show, Lane rebelled against her mother, Mrs.


In the early 2000’s, Lane Kim was one of the few young Asian American female characters on TV, as the best friend to Rory Gilmore on the cult classic show Gilmore Girls.
